- Abstract
A funnel-shaped hexactinellid sponge of 18 cm diameter is described from a phosphoritic limestone bed of the lower Numismalismergel Formation, exemplary for the Hexactinellida common there. Hexactines can also be found in other layers of this formation, which is here only 1.5 m thick, and are generally widespread in the »phosphoritic limestone facies« of the Franconian Numismalismergel Formation. Their frequent occurrence is interpreted as an indication of a high sea level and an increased nutrient supply via ocean waters from the Tethys in the southwest. A seawater bottom current directed from southwest to northeast is also evidenced by current-aligned belemnite rostra of a horizon in the middle of the formation. - Issue Date
