- Abstract
From some condensed series of the Lower and Middle Jurassic of Southern Germany stromatolithic crusts and large coated grains are described. The material was collected in outcrops of the "Rhein-Main-Donau-Kanal" close to the small town Sulzkirchen (Südliche Frankenalb), of Unnersdorf and Mistelgau (both Nördliche Frankenalb), Hetzles (Mittlere Frankenalb), and Aalen (Ostschwäbische Alb). Some of the stromatolithic structures are located within ammonite conches and under margins of large oncolites. These occurences of lithified microbial mats indicate an aphotic environment. Therefore, chemoautotrophic and/or heterotrophic organisms are probable responsible for these special crusts. In close connection with these crusts are networks of thin, partly dividing, pyritic threats, which are interpreted as remains of fungi mycels. This particular community of fungi and lithified aphotic procaryots indicates a special (micro-) environment and can be compared with deeper water aphotic stromatolitic crusts. Therefore, these particular crusts cannot be used as indicators for nearshore light-dominated shallow water environments. - Issue Date
