- Hoverfliesandblowflieshavedistinctlydifferentflightstyles.Yet,bothspecieshavebeenshowntostructuretheirflightbehaviorinawaythatfacilitatesextractionof3Dinformationfromtheimageflowontheretinaopticflow).Neuronalcandidatestoanalyzetheopticflowarethetangentialcellsinthethirdopticalganglion–thelobulacomplex.Theseneuronsaredirectionallyselectiveandintegratetheopticflowoverlargepartsofthevisualfield.Homologtangentialcellsinhoverfliesandblowflieshaveasimilarmorphology.Becauseblowfliesandhoverflieshavesimilarneuronallayoutbutdistinctlydifferentflightbehav-iors,theyareanidealsubstratetopinpointpotentialneuronaladaptationstothedifferentflightstyles.Inthisarticlewedescribetherelationshipbetweenlocomotionbehaviorandmotionvisiononthreedifferentlevels:(1)Wecomparethedifferentflightstylesbasedonthecategorizationofflightbehaviorintoprototypicalmovements.(2)Wemeasurethespecies-specificdynamicsoftheopticflowundernaturalisticflightconditions.Wefoundthetranslationalopticflowofbothspeciestobeverydifferent.(3)Wedescribepossi-bleadaptationsofahomologmotion-sensitiveneuron.Westimulatethiscellinblowflies(Calliphora)andhoverflies(Eristalis)withnaturalisticopticflowgeneratedbybothspeciesduringfreeflight.Thecharacterizedhoverflytangentialcellrespondsfastertotransientchangesintheopticflowthanitsblowflyhomolog.Itisdiscussedwhetherandhowthedifferentdynamicalresponsepropertiesaidopticflowanalysis.
