Abstract
This paper presents an innovative design for invest igating mathematical beliefs. Students of grades 5, 9, and 11 were asked to express their vie ws on mathematics on a sheet of paper. Further data was collected and qualitative methods were employed to identify the beliefs encoded in these works. The data was analyzed accor ding to established categories describing mathematical beliefs. Typical features of each cate gory were found in the pictures. Concrete examples that support these features are provided a s evidences for the represented mathematical beliefs. Interestingly, older students, from grade 9 in this study, often include affective aspects in their pictures and texts on mathematics.
