Abstract
This article presents a retrospective on the development of IETF Next Steps in Signaling protocols, a more flexible signaling framework than Resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP), and discusses challenges for signaling in emerging network architectures, including software-defined networking, network function virtualization, and service function chaining.
